Expanding Opportunities: The Impact of Vocational Rooms in Education

In honor of Louise G. Goldberg, a former dedicated teacher and board member of The Children’s Guild, generous donors helped create a vocational room at The Children’s Guild: Transformation Academy. The Louise G. Goldberg Vocational Room offers students pathways to skill development and job readiness, enhancing their employability and overall quality of life.

“This new space represents a significant milestone in our commitment to providing an inclusive educational environment. This space supports the social, emotional, and sensory needs of our students on the autism spectrum, empowering them to thrive,” says Vesna Grujicic, Principal of Transformation Academy.

The Vocational Room helps students acquire functional academic and living skills while developing vocational skills through job sampling on campus in simulated work environments, shadowed internships in the community, and competitive employment. Some skills students have learned in this new space include food preparation, sorting items, and cleaning.

Three Filipino Teachers Began Their Journey to the United States to Teach Special Education at The Children’s Guild in Prince George’s County

Richard Sagun (left), Rachelle Evangelista (center), and Curt Cruz (right) are not just teachers; they’re resilient, passionate individuals who embody the spirit of dedication and perseverance. Their journey to The Children’s Guild School of Prince George’s County, Maryland, was not a smooth one, but it is a testament to their strength and determination.

Despite facing initial challenges with paperwork and entry issues, these three Filipino educators didn’t give up. They each independently sought out the same recruitment agent, a decision influenced by the recommendations of other teachers. Through this shared connection, they found themselves embarking on a journey together, forming a support system that would become crucial in their transition to a new country.

Renting rooms in the same house, they not only found affordable accommodations but also built a bond that would help them navigate the challenges of their new environment. This bond goes beyond mere convenience; it speaks to the power of camaraderie and the importance of a strong support network, especially in unfamiliar territory.

As they approach the end of their first year at The Children’s Guild, Cruz, Evangelista, and Sagun have not only adapted to their new roles but have also thrived in them. Working in special education, they have embraced the challenges and the rewards that come with it, recognizing the vital role they play in the lives of their students.

Their story is a reminder of the resilience of the human spirit and the impact that individuals can have when they come together with a shared purpose. The Children’s Guild is currently hiring at all of our non-public special education schools. Help us in our mission to educate those in need.

According to The Council for Exceptional Children, nearly 98 percent of school districts nationwide were experiencing a shortage of special educators in 2020. The organization notes that employee turnover in special education is on the rise despite an increasing number of students with disabilities.

The Children’s Guild Featured in MANSEF December 2023 Newsletter

The Children’s Guild was pleased to be recognized in the Maryland Association of Nonpublic Special Education Facilities (MANSEF) December 2023 Newsletter. MANSEF is a not-for-profit organization of 70 nonpublic special education facilities approved by the Maryland State Department of Education. These schools promote quality services for children and youth with disabilities.

The School News section of the MANSEF December 2023 Newsletter discussed:

  • The Children’s Guild School of Baltimore’s new Career Center. This Career Center provides students with valuable hands-on projects that impart amazing skills. Through engaging activities, such as building Bluetooth speakers, students are exposed to diverse future possibilities and pathways. This initiative not only expands their horizons but also instills a sense of capability and creativity. It also allows students to surpass their circumstances, fostering a mindset of realizing their potential and embracing learning through appropriate channels.
  • The Children’s Guild School of Prince George’s County received funding for assisted learning devices. This new program caters to students requiring additional resources in the classroom. These devices aim to break down barriers to learning, enabling students to excel in their academic pursuits during the current school year. These investments demonstrate the commitment to providing tailored support and ensuring every student has the tools needed to succeed.
  • The Children’s Guild: Transformation Academy pays tribute to Louise G. Goldberg, a former dedicated teacher and board member. Through her legacy gift to the organization, a vocational room named after her has been established. The Louise G. Goldberg Vocational Room serves as a space for students to develop essential skills and enhance job readiness, improving their employability and overall quality of life. The room was dedicated in her memory, with her family present to celebrate the grand opening and honor her enduring influence on the organization.

Career and College Readiness with The Children’s Guild School of Baltimore

Mr. Rykiel and Ms. Fletcher assist students in Career and College Readiness at The Children’s Guild School of Baltimore. This program focuses on preparing students for life after high school. These incredible teachers assist our students in developing essential skills required for diverse career paths, whether pursuing higher education or entering the workforce. Mr. Rykiel emphasizes the development of soft skills such as teamwork, communication, and work ethic, recognizing their universal importance in any job setting.

This course incorporates hands-on activities into the curriculum to provide students with a variety of learning techniques. It teaches practical skills related to specific career paths and provides students with a tangible experience of the working world. One notable example is the Bluetooth speaker that students crafted in the classroom. The excitement and enthusiasm of the students upon completing this project demonstrates the effectiveness of this approach. Hands-on activities not only engage the students but also allow them to see the direct application of their skills in real-world scenarios.

Ms. Fletcher, the Career Readiness, and Instructional Assistant, as well as the Transition Coordinator, collaborates with Mr. Rykiel to support students looking beyond high school. Recognizing that many students may face challenges in envisioning their future beyond the immediate context of school, she plays a crucial role in guiding them toward various post-high school paths. This includes exploring options such as trade school or college, and helping students identify and articulate their career aspirations.

One particularly rewarding aspect for both educators is witnessing the positive response from students. The enthusiasm, creativity, and communication skills demonstrated by the students indicate that the program is making a meaningful impact. Students not only enjoy the hands-on activities but also express excitement about their future careers, showcasing the success of the College and Career Readiness program at The Children’s Guild School of Baltimore. The dedication of Mr. Rykiel and Ms. Fletcher contributes to a supportive and empowering environment for students as they navigate their journey beyond high school.

The Children’s Guild joins the Autism Speaks Walk in Washington, D.C.

The Children’s Guild School of Prince George’s County had an incredible time at the Washington, DC, Autism Speaks Walk on October 17, 2023. The Autism Speaks Walk is not only where we celebrate our community and promote acceptance and understanding, but also the largest autism fundraiser in the country that helps to fuel Autism Speaks’ programs and services.

Autism Speaks is dedicated to promoting solutions, across the spectrum and throughout the lifespan, for the needs of individuals with autism and their families through advocacy and support; increasing understanding and acceptance of autism spectrum disorder; and advancing research into causes and better interventions for autism spectrum disorder and related conditions. Autism Speaks enhances lives today and is accelerating a spectrum of solutions for tomorrow.
