While growing childhood obesity and nutritional awareness have prompted Maryland schools to improve the health benefits of school meals by offering locally grown food, The Children's Guild goes a step further: students are growing their own food on campuses and learning to prepare it themselves. One morning in May, students, faculty and administrators at the Guild's Baltimore campus gathered for an all-school assembly. The excitement and exuberance of the students as they found their seats were clues this was not your run-of-the-mill school assemblies. This assembly was a showcase of the talent of the students at The Guild and, more importantly, a visual and auditory illustration of the impact the music program has on faculty, administrators and students alike. For Mari Luce Fernández, the decision to send her two daughters—ages 11 and 7—to Monarch Academy was based on several factors including the innovative learning approach and the school's rich learning environment.
